CEDAW: A Proven Record of Success

CEDAW can be a powerful tool for success when it is used by governments and civil society to protect basic rights and promote greater equality for women and girls. When women participate in political, economic and social life, they promote better health, well-being, prosperity and security of their families, communities and nations. In order for women and girls to contribute fully toward the creation of a better world, they need to be guaranteed the right to live a life free from violence and discrimination, to be educated, to work, to be healthy, and to participate fully in public life.

These stories from around the world offer examples of progress where CEDAW has been used to advance women's human rights and create greater equality. The information is taken from reports by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) and by the United Nations Office for the Development of Women (UNIFEM).
